Extracurriculars at JBU

While there are a wide variety of extracurriculars at JBU, it can sometimes be hard to find one or two that feel just right. For some, intramurals are an attractive option because they offer physical activity. For others, the work of student government is appealing. Regardless, there is always something to be a part of at JBU. Honors: One of the many extracurricular offerings at JBU is the Honors Scholars Program. Since its creation in the 1960s, the program has been a beacon of academic excellence and high achievement at JBU and allows students to take special honors courses, attend[…]

Head, Heart and Hand

Providing quality, Christian education is at the core of JBU’s mission. In order to achieve this, JBU’s founder and first president, John E. Brown Sr., established the philosophy of Head, Heart and Hand. The idea is that students go beyond mere academics during their time at JBU, and engage spiritually with themselves and each other during their time in college. The well-rounded philosophy of studies focuses on the holistic development of students, and encourages a form of scholarship that also involves practical skill and spiritual instruction in a way that most rival universities have yet to achieve.  Through the decades,[…]

The TP Game

One of the unique traditions at JBU is the famous Toilet Paper Game. The first men’s basketball game of the season, students, staff, alumni, parents and community members pack the arena and wait for JBU’s first score of the game. After that, the entire crowd launches rolls and rolls of toilet paper onto the court, causing a 15-minute pickup and a technical foul for the rest of the season. One of the other special things about this game is that it is also used to collect canned goods for the community.  The Toilet Paper Game, a tradition that started in[…]

Student Government

For many at JBU, student government was a fun and easy way to be involved during their time in high school, and continuing those activities in college offers an opportunity for growth in leadership skills as well as resume building. JBU’s answer to the typical “student council” is the Student Government Association, or SGA. The group exists to represent the entirety of the student population, and to be a voice for all students on campus. In addition to different projects and meeting the needs of the campus, they also act as a bridge between the student body and school administration. […]

The Caf

Kresge Dining Hall, better known as “the Caf,” is JBU’s go-to spot for amazing meals seven days a week! At the Caf, you can find a wide array of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that are built into your meal plan. The all-you-can eat dining hall includes a number of different food stations for students to get their food fix. Some of the options include: Homestyle – This is where students will find comfort food and tastes from home. The Zone – A station devoted to keeping out gluten, peanuts, and any other allergens. This station is perfect for[…]

What is the Covenant

John Brown University has a rich history of commitment when it comes to its core mission of providing Christ-centered higher education for all. As part of this mission, students are required to sign the community covenant at the start of each year. The covenant is a vessel of ground rules to ensure that JBU remains a community focused on Christ-like actions in everyday affairs on and off campus. The student covenant is signed the first week of the fall semester and students are able to review it with residence life staff before signing it. Elements of the student covenant include:[…]

Study Abroad

One of the many amazing opportunities that students can take advantage of during their time at JBU is studying abroad. With a wide array of international programs and a team devoted to helping students get outside of their comfort zone, students are sure to get connected with a program that will fit within their degree plan. In most study abroad programs,  classes offered will give credit for core classes, major-specific classes, or both. Study abroad trips are offered during the summer and during the school year. For the summer, students can go to Ireland, Jordan, Switzerland, or on one of[…]

Chapel and the Gathering

At JBU, one of the unique things that students get to experience are the weekly moments of worship, prayer, and fellowship at weekly services designed for fulfilling the chapel requirement. The requirement, which helps keep with JBU’s core mission of providing Christ-centered higher education to students, can be met in two main ways: attending chapel services, which occur at 10:30 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and attending the Gathering, which occurs at 9:00 pm on Sundays. At chapel, students get to worship with a live student band and listen to JBU professors, guest speakers, and JBU’s Chaplain, Keith Jagger, give[…]

Intramurals

John Brown University offers a wide variety of extracurriculars, but few are quite as popular as intramural sports. These sports give you the opportunity to participate in a group activity without having to make the full-time commitment of varsity sports. The purpose of these is to allow students to have fun and take a break from studying, while also making friends and forming relationships. Some of these include: Sand volleyball: This intramural is new to JBU, with new courts being installed near Hutchinson Hall just last year. These courts, as well as the courts in downtown Siloam Springs, are perfect[…]
