The TP Game

One of the unique traditions at JBU is the famous Toilet Paper Game. The first men’s basketball game of the season, students, staff, alumni, parents and community members pack the arena and wait for JBU’s first score of the game. After that, the entire crowd launches rolls and rolls of toilet paper onto the court, causing a 15-minute pickup and a technical foul for the rest of the season. One of the other special things about this game is that it is also used to collect canned goods for the community.  The Toilet Paper Game, a tradition that started in[…]

Battling Homesickness

One of the things that almost every college student faces during their time in school is homesickness. Being away from family and hometown friends can be difficult, regardless of how far you are into your college career.  We asked some JBU students how they handle homesickness. Here’s what they said: “Set up a schedule for regular calls back home. Not too frequently, but often enough.” – Ashley Nikkel, Senior “If your emotional health is taking a toll, literally do not feel guilty about taking a trip home.” – Julia Mattis, Senior “Try to stay busy with friends, but take time[…]

Student Government

For many at JBU, student government was a fun and easy way to be involved during their time in high school, and continuing those activities in college offers an opportunity for growth in leadership skills as well as resume building. JBU’s answer to the typical “student council” is the Student Government Association, or SGA. The group exists to represent the entirety of the student population, and to be a voice for all students on campus. In addition to different projects and meeting the needs of the campus, they also act as a bridge between the student body and school administration. […]

NWA Fall Activities

Northwest Arkansas is one of the prettiest locations in the south, and the fall season only amplifies that. The crisp air, clear days and bright colors of autumn are on full display, and there are many ways to enjoy these things out and about in NWA. Going for a drive – Sometimes, students just need to get off campus and take a moment to relax, and driving through the NWA countryside on a sunny fall day is the perfect time to do that. Catching a glimpse of the fall scenery either by yourself or in a car full of friends[…]

Saving Money in College

One of the truths of being a college student is that you will need to save money, and that can be difficult. For many, it can be hard not to eat out every meal, or not to buy coffee at the cafe you study at. We asked some JBU students and alumni how they have saved money as college students. Here’s what they said: “Meal prep your weeks out; every time you eat out it’s at least $7 that lasts for 30 minutes. You won’t always want to eat in the cafeteria, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat[…]

The Caf

Kresge Dining Hall, better known as “the Caf,” is JBU’s go-to spot for amazing meals seven days a week! At the Caf, you can find a wide array of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that are built into your meal plan. The all-you-can eat dining hall includes a number of different food stations for students to get their food fix. Some of the options include: Homestyle – This is where students will find comfort food and tastes from home. The Zone – A station devoted to keeping out gluten, peanuts, and any other allergens. This station is perfect for[…]

Thrift Stores in NWA

Northwest Arkansas has a wide variety of stores and markets to shop at, including boutiques, flea markets, and vintage pop-ups. However, some of the local favorites for college students are thrift stores. Secondhand shopping is becoming increasingly popular, due to ever-changing fashion trends thanks to social media apps such as Instagram and TikTok. Instead of spending money on full-priced skirts and jeans, it is more cost-efficient to buy them secondhand. It not only helps students on a budget, but it also helps the environment. If you enjoy thrifting or are looking to try it, here are just a few of[…]

Avoiding Burnout

No matter what time of the year, students are always at risk of experiencing burnout. Heavy course loads, jobs, and extracurriculars can all contribute to this. For some, burnout can be a difficult thing to escape, especially when work seems to increase throughout the semester with midterms, projects and finals. However, students remain resourceful and find new and helpful ways of fighting off burnout. We asked some JBU students how they deal with burnout and here’s what they said: “Know that it will happen. School gets repetitive and you will, at some point, feel some level of burnout, and that’s[…]

What is the Covenant

John Brown University has a rich history of commitment when it comes to its core mission of providing Christ-centered higher education for all. As part of this mission, students are required to sign the community covenant at the start of each year. The covenant is a vessel of ground rules to ensure that JBU remains a community focused on Christ-like actions in everyday affairs on and off campus. The student covenant is signed the first week of the fall semester and students are able to review it with residence life staff before signing it. Elements of the student covenant include:[…]
