Intramurals
John Brown University offers a wide variety of extracurriculars, but few are quite as popular as intramural sports. These sports give you the opportunity to participate in a group activity without having to make the full-time commitment of varsity sports. The purpose of these is to allow students to have fun and take a break from studying, while also making friends and forming relationships.
Some of these include:
- Sand volleyball: This intramural is new to JBU, with new courts being installed near Hutchinson Hall just last year. These courts, as well as the courts in downtown Siloam Springs, are perfect for late summer, early fall night games of competition.
- Pickleball: While one of the newer intramurals, this one has gained fast popularity due to the Presidential Pickleball Invitational, which sees JBU’s President, Dr. Pollard, and his Wife, Carey, playing doubles pickleball against teams of JBU students for the ultimate bragging rights.
- Spikeball: An unconventional sport, but taking campus by storm, you can find just about five spikeball sets in every dorm on campus. There are games going on throughout campus all weekend long. It’s also fairly simple and requires very little practice to master the basics, which makes it perfect for those who want to participate but aren’t keen on the more intense sports.
- Softball: This co-ed sport is the peak of the October-November months and offers a perfect break for students who are wanting to let loose just as classes are getting stressful and finals are around the corner.
- Basketball: One of the more well-known sports on the intramurals roster, this one is a classic that continues to grow in popularity and is perfect for those who like spontaneous, late-night pickup games.
These are just a few of the many sports offered on campus. One of the best things about the intramural program at JBU is that they are constantly looking for new ideas. Simply pitch the idea to the intramurals office and find enough people to join and you’ll be playing in no time. To learn more, you can contact the Intramural Sports Office at 479-524-7310.
